Bach Flower Remedies

A bibliography on Bach Flower Remedies: Introduction.

The Bach Flower Remedies is a system of 38 flower based remedies originating in the 1930s as formulated by Dr. Edward Bach. The system is premised on the notion that sickness is an expression of emotional disbalance. The remedies are aimed at combating certain negative emotional conditions and bring sanity, which, in its turn, leads to physical health.

The Core Philosophy

Dr. Bach, a doctor and homeopath, was of the opinion that disease could be cured through healing of the mind and spirit. He discovered 38 different negative emotional states, including fear, uncertainty, loneliness, and oversensitivity and discovered a flower essence that matched each of those states. He felt that they could change these emotional patterns with the kind of energy of the flowers.

The solutions are non-aggressive. They are prepared by adding the aroma of the wild flowers to spring water either through the so-called sun method or through the so-called boiling method. This water which has been impregnated is the so-called mother tincture, and it is preserved in brandy. The end result is extremely diluted, with the energetic part of the vibe of the flower as opposed to actual vegetal substance.

How the Remedies Work

All the 38 remedies are related to a certain emotional condition. The remedies are used by determining what emotions are aroused and selecting the remedy or multiple remedies. The remedies are generally administered orally, in a few drops spaced out in a glass of water.

The most famous curatives are:

  • Mimulus: In case of known phobias, e.g., phobia of talking before an audience, phobia of spiders, phobia of heights.
  • Impatiens: To impatience and vexation.
  • Larch: Because of the lack of confidence and inferiority.
  • Holly: Of negative emotions such as jealousy, hatred and envy.
  • Walnut: To get used to significant life transformations and prevent the impacts of outside factors.
  • Rescue Remedy: This is the most recognizable combination remedy, which is a mixture of 5 essences namely; Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Impatiens, Cherry Plum, and Clematis. It is applied in stressful or emergency cases to assist in giving one a feeling of calm and clarity.

The Seven Emotional Groups

Dr. Bach grouped the 38 remedies into seven emotional groups and therefore, now it is simpler to choose the appropriate remedy to your scenario.

  1. Fear: Rock Rose, Mimulus, Cherry Plum, Aspen, Red Chestnut.
  2. Uncertain: Cerato, Scleranthus, Gentian, Gorse, Hornbeam, Wild Oat.
  3. Lack of Interests in Current Conditions: Clematis, Honeysuckle, Wild Rose, Olive, White Chestnut, Mustard, Chestnut Bud.
  4. Loneliness: Water violet, Impatiens, Heather.
  5. Excessives to Influences and Ideas: Agrimony, Centaury, Walnut, Holly.
  6. Despondency or Despair: Larch, Pine, Elm, Sweet Chestnut, Star of Bethlehem, Willow, Oak, Crab Apple.
  7. Excessive attention to the Welfare of others: Chicory, Vervain, Vine, Beech, Rock Water.

Usage and Considerations

Bach Flower Remedies have been described as a safe and mild complementary medicine. They are not active in any real sense and as such are commonly used together with other conventional treatments. One should always talk to a medical expert before embarking on a new wellness program.

The most important thing about taking the remedies is that one should tell oneself about the present emotional state. The more specific you are at determining what you feel, the more chances you will use the right remedy and locate a favorable change in your emotional perspective.
